About
The art of BBQ and distilling has a long history as well. But what people don’t know is that black people and moonshine have a long history as well in the spirits industry, under the conditions where they could operate in the woods of the rural south.
Enslaved Americans conducted bbq and distilling traditions on plantations passed these traditions down within their communities across generations to the present era. In small communities in Clarendon County like Rimini, Paxville, and Panola these traditions were preserved in one way or another.
Following in the tradition of his ancestors, Harrison passed down his knowledge of BBQ and distilling to his son, Howard. Together, the father-son pair designed and manufactured the stills used to create their moonshine, and eventually Backyard Distillery, LLC.
Today, we at Backyard Distillery pay homage to our culture and history of distilling in the American South by sharing our spirits with others, beginning with moonshine made legally in South Carolina.
